Washington residents express heightened sense of insecurity following Trump's governance, according to survey
In a recent poll conducted by the Washington Post-Schar School, the opinions of Washington, DC, residents on various topics, including President Donald Trump, crime, and the city's police department, have been revealed.
The poll, which surveyed 604 DC residents between August 14-17, found that approximately 8 in 10 DC residents oppose President Trump ordering the federal government to take control of the city's police department. Only 17% of DC residents support this order.
The increased federal presence in the city has been noticed by more than half of Washington, DC, residents. However, 71% of DC residents believe DC police should not help the federal government much or at all to deport undocumented immigrants living in the city. Sixty-one percent of those who have noticed the increased federal presence feel less safe as a result of Trump's actions.
Crime is not seen as a significant problem by most DC residents. Only 31% of DC residents describe crime as an extremely or very serious problem in the District, down from 50% in the past. A 54% majority of DC residents believe the problem of crime in the city is improving.
Sixty-five percent of DC residents do not think Trump's actions will reduce the amount of violent crime in the city. Instead, they believe increased economic opportunities in poor neighborhoods (77%) and using outreach workers to resolve disputes (57%) would help to reduce violent crime.
When it comes to the city's mayor, Muriel Bowser, about half of DC residents believe she should be doing more to oppose Trump. Her rating stands at 53%, while Trump's overall job approval rating among all DC residents stands at 15%.
Sixty-three percent of DC residents believe an increased number of Metropolitan Police officers patrolling communities would help to reduce violent crime. This support for the city's police is reflected in the community, with most DC residents (70%) opposing Trump's order for the federal government to take control of the city's police department.
