Waste Management Sector Strikes in Dusseldorf on Thursday

Municipal Utilities, Water Supply, and Disposal Operations in Düsseldorf to Join Nationwide Strike

Municipal utilities, water supply, and disposal operations in Düsseldorf and its surrounding area will participate in a nationwide strike on February 20, 2023. The affected companies include Stadtwerke Duisburg, Stadtwerke Erkrath, Stadtwerke Solingen - Supply, SWS Netze Solingen GmbH, Energy and Water for Remscheid, Stadtwerke Düsseldorf AG, and Netzgesellschaft Düsseldorf mbH.

The strike is a response to ongoing issues in the energy, water, and waste management sectors, where companies are struggling to fill vacant positions. The energy industry, in particular, is suffering significantly from a shortage of skilled workers.

The employees, who have been working at their limits for years, are demanding better working conditions and fairer pay to make these positions more attractive. They are also seeking to achieve the energy transition, climate change adaptation, and digitalization while ensuring uninterrupted 24/7 safe supply.

Despite the strike, there will initially be no direct impact on citizens due to the contingency plans in place. However, the strikes are scheduled to continue on Friday, February 21, and could potentially lead to disruptions in services.

It's important to note that Awista and waste disposal will not be on strike. Meanwhile, other public services, such as workers at Düsseldorf Airport, have announced strikes for a later date.

Strikes in the public sector are gaining momentum nationwide, reflecting the growing pressure on employees from increased workloads and unfilled positions. The municipal utilities, water supply, and disposal operations, and waste incineration plants in Düsseldorf and its surrounding area will join the nationwide strike on February 20.

This collective action by the municipal utilities aims to bring attention to the urgent need for improved working conditions and fairer pay in the energy, water, and waste management sectors. The outcome of the strike remains to be seen, but it underscores the importance of addressing these issues to ensure the long-term sustainability of these essential services.
