Water leakage occurs in Offenbach's data center, posing no risk to potable water supply.
In an unexpected turn of events, a leak was reported in a data center's piping system located on Lämmerspieler Weg, Offenbach industrial area. The affected company promptly took action by pumping out the leaked cooling water.
The exact time when the cooling water could reach the groundwater remains uncertain, but initial investigations suggest that the leaked water seeped into the ground and potentially reached the groundwater.
Fortunately, the drinking water in the supply network of the Zweckverband Wasserversorgung (ZWO) for the city and district of Offenbach remains unaffected, according to the city of Offenbach. No immediate danger to the population has been reported.
However, as a precautionary measure, the city of Offenbach advises private well owners in the vicinity to refrain from using the water for consumption or irrigation. This recommendation is due to the water contained additives for corrosion protection and preservation, two of which are considered water-hazardous.
Groundwater monitoring is currently being conducted in the area to detect any potential impacts on the groundwater in a timely manner. The ZWO wells in the protected area of the city of Mühlheim are closely monitored, and the nearest ones are over 1.5 kilometers away.
Authorities plan to regularly analyze the groundwater at various measuring points to detect any potential impacts. So far, groundwater samples from the surrounding measurement points of the city of Offenbach have not been analyzed due to a focus on other water quality monitoring tasks or local priorities.
The Darmstadt Regional Council and the responsible water authority were informed of the incident. The city of Offenbach does not report any immediate danger to the population regarding the incident and assures residents that they will keep them updated on any developments.
It is important to note that there are no drinking water wells in the affected area, and no impact on drinking water has been reported beyond the affected data center's area. The city of Offenbach remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
