Water sports training goes green at TVK dinner, as boat baptism signifies the transition to climate-friendly boating practices.
Turnverein 1877 e.V. Essen-Kupferdreh Embraces Electric Boats for Environmental Protection
In a significant move towards climate-neutral mobility, the Turnverein 1877 e.V. Essen-Kupferdreh traditional club has decided to convert its motorboats to electric propulsion. This decision was inspired by the Weiße Flotte Baldeney, which has already made the switch to electric boats, and another water sports association at Baldeneysee that has converted its motorboats to electric propulsion.
The Turnverein 1877 e.V. Essen-Kupferdreh is the first water sports club at the Baldeneysee to operate its training boats electrically. The conversion of the club's two motorboats is seen as an important step towards environmental protection, particularly at the Baldeneysee.
Dr. Stephan Buhne, the chairman of the Turnverein 1877 e.V. Essen-Kupferdreh, spearheaded this initiative. The first of the two boats was officially christened on 31 August 2025, with the second boat set to follow soon with the same conversion. The switch to a 12 kW electric motor will enable the accompaniment of sports activities without CO2 emissions and noise.
The club's motorboats previously used gasoline outboard motors with a power output of 20 kW or 25 kW, consuming around 600 to 1,000 liters of gasoline per year. The conversion to electric propulsion will significantly reduce these emissions and contribute to environmental protection in the city.
The batteries of the boats will be charged in a climate-neutral manner using the output of the club's solar installation. This move aligns with Essen's status as the Green Capital of Europe (2017).
The christening ceremony was attended by Dr. Stephan Buhne, chairman of the TVK, district mayor Willi Kohlmann, and Simone Raskob, the business area manager for environment, traffic, and sport. Raskob expressed her support for the initiative, stating that it is an important step towards sustainable mobility in the region.
This move by the Turnverein 1877 e.V. Essen-Kupferdreh is expected to inspire other water sports clubs and boat owners at the Baldeneysee to follow suit, contributing to a cleaner and greener lake environment.
