In the heart of Las Vegas, the ongoing strike by hospitality workers at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas has gained significant attention, with performers and artists joining the cause in support of the workers.

The strike, which began on November 15, is led by the Culinary Union, representing approximately 700 workers. The union is seeking salary increases and other benefit improvements, a request that has been met with various responses from management.

Recently, Virgin Hotels Las Vegas offered an estimated 30 cents an hour in wage increases (per hour, per year, after benefits are paid). However, the union has not seriously countered this proposal nor brought it to their members for a formal vote.

In a show of solidarity, comedian Steve Hofstetter, with over 823K subscribers on YouTube, cancelled his scheduled January 1 performance at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. His cancelled performance, initially scheduled at the 24 Oxford performance venue, will now be rescheduled for May 19 at Wise Guys Las Vegas Town Square.

Ted Pappageorge, Culinary Union secretary-treasurer, praised Hofstetter's decision, calling it a "courageous stand for justice and fairness." The union also encourages other performers, customers, and conventions to cancel their plans at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas until the strike is settled.

Last month, Virgin Hotels Las Vegas accused the Culinary Union of bargaining in bad faith. However, the union believes that these workers are ready to bargain and make their own decisions. They have also rejected a recent proposal from the hotel to engage in binding arbitration to end the strike.

The union's goal is to secure a proposal similar to what many other Las Vegas-area casino-hotels have agreed to in recent contracts. Notably, in January 2025, the artist Lady Gaga announced that she cancelled her event at the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas in solidarity with striking hotel workers.

Despite management's threats of permanent replacements and the hiring of scabs, the union maintains that these workers are not looking for a third party to step in. Tickets for Steve Hofstetter's cancelled performance at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas will be refunded automatically.

As the strike continues, the spotlight remains on Virgin Hotels Las Vegas and the Culinary Union, with the hope that a fair resolution can be reached in the near future.
