'Welcome to Your Freshman Abode': Kickstart College Life Alongside Fellow Freshmen
Welcoming a New Academic Year at Georgetown University
As August rolls in, Georgetown University's campus comes alive with the energy and excitement of a new academic year. This year, 1,606 new students joined the community, hailing from 48 states and 52 countries, making the university a truly global hub of learning.
The first-year and transfer students moved into the Hilltop Campus on Aug. 21-22, marking the beginning of their journey at Georgetown. For the first-generation student who entered medical school, this was an especially significant milestone.
The university's vibrant community was evident from the start. Barbecues were held on both Hilltop and Capitol Campuses, providing opportunities for new students to meet and mingle. New friendships were formed, and the residential staff, including 20+ residential ministers from various faith backgrounds, were there to support students in their transition.
Before the first day of classes, the Mass of the Holy Spirit was celebrated, a traditional event that marks the beginning of the academic year and seeks the blessings of God for the success of students and faculty.
Soyica Diggs Colbert (C'01), the interim provost, and Interim President Robert M. Groves addressed the students at the New Student Convocation, welcoming them to the Georgetown community and encouraging them to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.
Inspiring words were shared by Isra Satiar (H'26), a senior, who encouraged her fellow students to seek support and be open to new paths. Letters from Georgetown seniors about their first year of college also provided valuable insights and advice.
The university's commitment to sustainability was evident as a new home was found in the Environment & Sustainability Program Downtown. Moreover, tours of Washington, D.C., landmarks were organized for students, offering them a chance to explore and learn about the city's rich history and culture.
A School of Health student reflected on her summer helping refugees, underscoring the university's focus on fostering a sense of social responsibility among its students.
The university's partnership with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) continued, with the institution likely admitting students related to programs supported by DAAD. This partnership is part of Georgetown's ongoing efforts to promote global understanding and cultural exchange.
Students were also encouraged to decorate their rooms to make them feel like home, a small but significant step in helping them settle into their new environment.
As the New Student Convocation came to a close, it was clear that the 2022-2023 academic year at Georgetown University was set to be a memorable one, filled with learning, growth, and new experiences.
