Minister Giuseppe Valditara has unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at supporting school staff in Italy, addressing their housing needs and offering improved benefits in areas such as healthcare and transportation.

One of the key announcements is the 'Casa Italia' plan, which outlines new housing policies and social housing. Under this plan, apartments will be allocated to school professionals, with a focus on those who move for work reasons. In future social housing projects, apartments will be reserved for school staff at regulated prices.

In a bid to alleviate the financial burden of renting, Minister Valditara has announced the possibility of regulated rents for school staff. This initiative, aimed at supporting teachers who live away from home, is expected to provide much-needed relief.

The health insurance, a welfare measure promoted by the Ministry of Education, is another significant announcement. With an initial annual state funding of 65 million euros from 2026 to 2029, the health insurance will cover a portion of the health expenses for permanent and one-year contract employees, including teachers, educators, school principals, and Ata staff. The insurance covers major interventions such as surgeries and cancer therapies, as well as minor treatments like dental care and childbirth expenses. Automatic enrollment will be possible upon request for school staff.

Two agreements with Banca Popolare di Milano (BPM) and UniCredit for mortgages and loans have been active for a year. While other banks are also proposing benefits for school staff, there is no specific current public information identifying other banks offering special advantages in mortgages and loans specifically for teaching staff. It is recommended to directly consult banks or regional educators' financial programs for tailored offers, as such benefits vary and are often negotiated locally.

The welfare package includes a trial with some economic operators in transportation. Reduced air and rail fares from Ita Airways, Trenitalia, and Italo are among the benefits, along with discounts on car parking fees at Rome Airports and additional benefits in the airport and duty-free shopping.

Minister Valditara has also announced his commitment to find additional funds to extend the insurance to supply teachers until June 30. Ministry technicians are working on a contribution for non-self-sufficiency.

These initiatives, part of a broader effort to support school staff, demonstrate the government's commitment to addressing the challenges faced by educators in Italy.
