Welsh Corgis from across Europe compete in a dog race in Vilnius
In the heart of Lithuania's capital, Vilnius, the annual "Corgi Race Vilnius" attracted thousands of spectators this year. Teams from Europe, including Poland, Latvia, Germany, Austria, and Italy, joined the festivities, bringing their furry companions to compete in a series of fun-filled events.
One of the highlights was the costume challenge, where dogs donned eye-catching outfits like Batman, a princess, or an airplane, delighting the children in attendance. The winner of this year's costume challenge was a corgi named Amigo, who sported a factory-themed costume complete with two tiny chimneys and "Fur Factory" lettering.
The solo race was another hotly contested event, with the corgi named Mango, owned by Ignas Klimaika from Vilnius, taking the top spot. Ignas and his family had trained diligently for the race last year but did not finish perfectly. However, this year, they decided to enjoy the event without the pressure of training, and it paid off. Mango's owners screamed and waved to try to inspire him to victory, and it seemed to work, as Mango crossed the finish line first.
Ignas and his family have participated in "Corgi Race Vilnius" for the second time, and they are already planning to return in 2026. Despite the excitement of this year's event, there is no information available about the corgi that will win the race in 2026.
The event will culminate on Sunday with the World Corgi Meetup, where dogs in Lithuania will be connected via a live broadcast with their peers in the United States, Ireland, and Poland. This global celebration of the beloved Welsh corgis, who are widely known for their association with the British royal family, promises to be a memorable occasion.
Retired teacher Janina Stoniene attended the race with her three grandchildren, who admired the costumes and the corgi's competitive spirit. As the sun set on the capital's largest park, it was clear that "Corgi Race Vilnius" had once again brought joy and excitement to the city.
