West AA Tennis Tournament Witnesses a Dominant Performance by Hellgate High School Tennis Team
On a sunny day in April, the Missoula schools hosted the annual Western AA Tennis Tournament at Playfair Park and The Fort Missoula Tennis Courts. The event showcased the talents of many young players, some of whom were participating in their first high school tennis matches.
In the girls doubles competition, there were several standout performances. Hanford and Ma from Hellgate claimed victory in the consolation bracket, defeating Helena's Ed Coleman and Ethan Walsh 9-7. Meanwhile, Currie and Kujawa emerged as the overall champions, defeating Sentinel's Kane Szalay and Preston Thormahlen 8-0. The final of the 1 & 2 bracket saw a close-fought match between Brooke Best (12) and Mae Michelson (12) of Hellgate and Sarah Downs and Haven Speer of Glacier. Despite a valiant effort, Best and Michelson lost 6-8.
The girls singles competition was equally competitive. In the 1 & 2 draw, Elliotte Banziger (10) emerged victorious, beating her teammate Kendall Adler (11) in the finals 8-0. The 3 & 4 draw saw Chloe McCulloch (12) claim the consolation title, defeating Adelaide Terwilliger (9) 8-3 in the finals.
On the boys side, the 1 & 2 draw for singles saw Samuel Ender (11) and Jack Welch (10) reach the semi finals before losing their matches. Aidan LaTrielle March (9) made it to round 2 in the boys 1 & 2 bracket before losing to Trevin Kockler of Capital. The boys 3 & 4 bracket was won by Andrew Dunman (9), who played against Benjamin Stake from Sentinel and emerged victorious 8-1.
The doubles competition on the boys side saw several exciting matches. However, due to a lack of search results, it is unclear who played alongside Oliver Hansen in the Boys' Doubles at the Western AA Tennis Tournament for Missoula Schools on April 20 of any year.
In the girls doubles 3 & 4 draw, Laine Banziger (12) and Maia Yatsko (9) lost in the semi finals to Downs/Speer 1-8. Johnstone and Graybeal made it to the semi finals in the same bracket before losing to Cadence and Cassidy Daniels. Clark and Lowder lost in round 2 to Morgen McClung and Avery Wolff of Big Sky 0-8.
The tournament was a tournament format, with each player playing up to 4 matches against players of a similar level. The event was a testament to the growing talent and enthusiasm for tennis among the young players in Missoula schools. The Missoula schools tennis team should be proud of their performances at the Western AA Tennis Tournament.
