Western Tube of Engelberg Tunnel Now Open for Traffic
Engelberg Tunnel: East Tube Closed at Night for Renovation, West Tube Now Open
The Engelberg Tunnel, a crucial transportation route in southern Germany, has seen some changes due to ongoing renovation work.
After the summer holidays, increased traffic at the tunnel has been observed, particularly in the east tube. However, one of the damaged ventilation fans in the east tube has already been repaired. Unfortunately, the other fan needs to be completely replaced, as it's a special order for the Engelberg Tunnel, and procurement will take some time.
In a positive development, the west tube of the Engelberg Tunnel has reopened for car traffic since Monday evening. The repair work for the west tube has ended, and it is now open for drivers coming from Karlsruhe. For vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, the west tube is accessible during the day, but at night, between 22:00 and 05:00, they can only use the west tube.
The closure of the east tube at night is due to a car fire on 13 August that damaged two ventilation fans. As a result, the east tube is currently closed at night for all vehicles to ensure safety during the renovation work. The night-time closure has noticeably eased traffic congestion at the Leonberg-Ost interchange.
Despite the temporary inconvenience, Autobahn GmbH assures that safety in the Engelberg Tunnel is guaranteed at all times. Travelers from other directions, such as Munich or Heilbronn, can use the Engelberg Tunnel without any restrictions or changes.
The planned reopening date for the east tube of the Engelberg Tunnel for traffic is autumn 2025. Until then, the repair and renovation work will continue, ensuring the Engelberg Tunnel remains a safe and efficient transportation route for travelers in southern Germany.
