'White Winter Belleville apple' selected as 'Year's Apple' on Kiekeberg Orchard
In a unique collaboration, the open-air museum at Kiekeberg, BUND Hamburg, the Pomological Society, and the Environmental House have come together to plant the "White Winterglockenapfel" in the garden of a refugee settlement house on Königsberger Straße. This apple variety, named the "Apple of the Year North Germany" 2024, is a sour apple that boasts a pleasant lemon-like acidity and remains crisp, making it an ideal choice for providing vitamins during the winter half of the year.
The planting of the White Winterglockenapfel is part of an effort to depict the post-war decades in Königsberger Straße. The tree thrives in permeable and changeable soil, which was common in the post-war period with rubble remnants and filled-in earth.
Gardener Matthias Schuh explains the significance of this apple variety, stating that its good storage capabilities make it suitable for providing vitamins during the winter months. The White Winterglockenapfel has white, firm flesh, and a light green colour that turns yellow after storage. Its cone- to bell-shaped form gives it its name, making it easily recognizable and identifiable as a Glockenapfel.
Children particularly enjoy the sour taste of the White Winterglockenapfel, according to Joachim Reinig from the Pomological Society. The planting of this apple tree is a testament to the community's commitment to preserving and promoting local produce.
The person responsible for planting the White Winterglockenapfel at the Kiekeberg Open-Air Museum was Markus Bähr. The Environmental House is another organization involved in the planting of the White Winterglockenapfel in the garden of the refugee settlement house in Königsberger Straße.
This initiative not only adds a touch of history to the area but also contributes to a greener and healthier environment. The White Winterglockenapfel, with its unique characteristics and rich history, is sure to be a cherished addition to the community for years to come.
