WIBA Co-Founder Ida Mok Drives Change in Blockchain Industry
Ida Mok, co-founder of Women in Blockchain Asia (WIBA), is driving change in the blockchain industry. WIBA, established in 2022, aims to empower women with equal opportunities, a mission that has gained significant traction with over 2,000 members and 200 graduates benefiting from its programs.
WIBA's journey hasn't been without challenges. Initially, it struggled to secure support from male leaders in tech. However, seven men eventually backed the organization, with the Algorand Foundation providing crucial funding. Ida Mok, also chief legal officer of Fluidity Money, believes men should play a more prominent role in supporting women's empowerment in the blockchain industry.
George Wong, head of Singapore at The Sandbox and honorary secretary of WIBA, has been a polarizing figure. While criticized for tokenism, he emphasizes the importance of fairness and opportunity for women. This echoes the broader historical trend of female empowerment movements being led by women, from the Women's March on Versailles to the #MeToo movement.
WIBA's programs cover both technical and non-technical skills, with approximately 65% of graduates being women. Ida Mok co-founded WIBA with Jasmine Ng to address the under-participation of women in tech fields. The organization has independently explored new initiatives, with the support of 'male allies' like George Wong.
WIBA's narrative on gender dynamics and power in the tech space is likely to spark mixed reactions. However, it serves as a reminder that progress is complex and not always linear. With over 2,000 members and 200 graduates, WIBA is making a tangible impact, proving that empowering women in the blockchain industry is not just a worthy cause, but a necessary one.
