Wild Slovakian bear attacks and harms a jogger
In a rare but unsettling incident, a 27-year-old jogger was attacked by a brown bear in Slovakia on Wednesday evening. The attack took place outside of human settlements, in the natural habitat of these majestic creatures.
According to reports by the news agency TASR and the regional police department of Trencin, the incident occurred on the municipal territory of the village of Nedozery-Brezany. The area is known to be a thriving habitat for brown bears.
The bear, protecting her cubs, showed a "natural behavior" during the attack. Brown bears in Slovakia usually avoid humans if they notice them in time. However, they can attack if they encounter humans unexpectedly or if mother bears perceive their cubs to be in danger.
Fortunately, the jogger is not in life-threatening danger and will have to stay in the hospital for observation for some time. The regional authorities have advised anyone moving in the area to behave carefully due to the presence of bears.
This incident serves as a reminder of the need for coexistence between humans and wildlife. As of the latest official count in 2022, there are approximately 1,200 free-living brown bears in Slovakia. A new count is planned for 2025/2026.
It's worth noting that other bear encounters in Slovakia have ended fatally in the past. State nature conservationists urge caution and respect for these animals, which are an integral part of Slovakia's rich wildlife.
Hunters were the first to arrive at the injured person and provided first aid. The bear attack cannot be directly identified from the text provided for March 2023. However, other related bear attacks in Slovakia are reported in March 2024 and incidents around that period.
As we move forward, it's crucial to understand and respect the habitats of these animals and take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of both humans and wildlife. The coexistence of humans and brown bears in Slovakia is a delicate balance that requires careful management and understanding.
