Wildfire aftermath: Automotive industry reacts to California's disaster

In the face of the devastating wildfires that have been ravaging Los Angeles since early January, several major automobile manufacturers have stepped up to provide aid and assistance to those affected.

Hyundai Capital America and Mazda Financial Services are offering payment relief options to eligible customers in the designated disaster areas. Similarly, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Nissan, and Toyota are providing assistance, with companies such as Ford, BMW Group, Mercedes-Benz, Lucid Motors, and Rivian joining the effort.

Hyundai and Genesis Motor America have donated $200,000 to the Red Cross and the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, while Honda has contributed $500,000 to the American Red Cross to support relief efforts in California. BMW Group has donated $1 million to the American Red Cross for California wildfire relief efforts, and Mercedes-Benz USA has followed suit with a $500,000 donation to the same organisations.

Ford Philanthropy is also providing ongoing support to the American Red Cross, Feeding America, and Team Rubicon, organisations active in the relief efforts. Ford Motor Co. has awarded grants to the Los Angeles Fire Department and the California Community Foundation's Wildfire Recovery Fund.

Assistance from these companies includes donations to relief efforts and help with vehicle loan and lease payments. For example, General Motors is providing complimentary OnStar Assist Services for Chevrolet, Buick, GMC & Cadillac customers in California impacted by the wildfires.

In addition to financial aid, some companies are offering practical assistance. Lucid Motors is providing additional resources, including employees volunteering with organisations delivering relief supplies. Rivian has deployed vehicles to support the delivery of relief supplies to impacted areas, and is providing free DC fast charging for its vehicles through its Rivian Adventure Network sites located within 150 miles of Los Angeles. Lucid Motors is offering free charging for all electric vehicle drivers at its studio and service locations in specified areas.

Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate due to the wildfires, and aid has been pouring in from around the country to help those affected. Toyota Motor North America is contributing annually to disaster recovery nonprofits, including the Red Cross and SBP. Toyota and Lexus customers affected by the wildfires are eligible for financial relief options.

The wildfires in Los Angeles have destroyed tens of thousands of acres and hundreds of structures, causing widespread destruction and displacement. Despite the challenges, the automobile industry has shown its commitment to supporting the community in these difficult times.
