Wind farm collaboration persisting, powered by resource-demanding efforts

In the heart of Hesse, north of Steinbach, preparations are underway for the "Fernewald" wind park project. This ambitious endeavour, driven by the collaboration of three municipalities – Fernwald, Buseck, and Gießen – is set to supply renewable electricity to around 43,500 households upon completion.

The project, which focuses on local value creation and promoting clean energy, has received support from LEA Hesse. The mayors of the involved municipalities have agreed that local participation, including municipalities and citizen energy cooperatives, is a priority.

The wind park project is a result of intermunicipal cooperation, with the goal of not just supplying clean electricity but also promoting local value creation. The contract partners and project developers for the wind park are "Lintas Green Energy GmbH" and "Land+Forst Renewable Energies GmbH".

In choosing the site, efforts were made to minimise the use of valuable and damaged forest areas. Despite some unavoidable forest interference, the implementation aims to be as gentle as possible, using existing paths and planning to reforest affected areas.

Expert opinions are being completed for the wind park project, and the application for a building permit was submitted to the government presidency in Gießen in June 2025. The operating company for the Fernewald wind park is currently being prepared.

Construction for the wind park is expected to begin in 2027, with further implementation steps being prepared. The short film showcases the collaboration between the three municipalities in driving the energy transition forward.

Up to 70% of the shares for the wind park will be owned by the municipalities and regional partners. This local ownership reflects the commitment of the municipalities to the project and their shared vision for a sustainable future.

The "Fernewald" wind park project is a significant step towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future for Hesse and its residents. The project's focus on local value creation and collaboration between municipalities and regional partners is a model for other regions seeking to transition to renewable energy sources.
