Winemaker Avignonesi vows to uphold quality standards and emphasize regional character in their vintages

In the heart of Tuscany, the Avignonesi winery continues to push the boundaries of winemaking, showcasing the potential of international varieties and the unique terroir of Cortona.

The Desiderio, an expression of the deep, mineral-rich Pleistocene clays, is a testament to this. Made from 100% Merlot grapes, this wine's lineage can be traced back to a rare Chianina bull that once roamed the winery's estate over a century ago.

The vinification process for Desiderio is a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. The wine spends time in conical stainless steel tanks for freshness and vibrancy, before being aged in oak barriques for 24 months to achieve complexity and harmony. The 2021 vintage, with its perfect ripening and healthy grapes, promises to be exceptional. However, further details about its taste and release date are yet to be revealed.

The label for the 2021 Desiderio may depict details related to the weather events that shaped the vintage, a tradition that adds a personal touch to each bottle.

Meanwhile, the Poggetto di Sopra, a refined Sangiovese wine, is produced from grapes grown on different plots each year. The label design reflects this, with a plan of the vineyard and the specific plots used in the bottle. Poggetto di Sopra is characterised by vibrant, fleshy red berries, violets, and a long balsamic finish.

Avignonesi's commitment to terroir-driven wines and sustainable practices is evident in their polycultural philosophy. With 308 hectares of land, including vineyards, woodland, arable land, and olive groves, the winery encourages biodiversity and has been certified organic and biodynamic since 2021. They are also proud to be a B-Corp.

The 2021 vintage was indeed a vintage of unsurpassed quality for Avignonesi. However, the flavour profile of the 2021 Desiderio wine remains a mystery at this time. As we eagerly await further updates, we can take comfort in Avignonesi's dedication to producing wines that truly reflect their unique terroir.

Established in 1974, Avignonesi boasts over half a century of winemaking tradition. Founded to promote agricultural innovation, the Le Capezzine estate has been instrumental in shaping the winery's journey. Despite the challenges posed by early spring frost in 2021, the vines were able to access abundant water reserves during the relatively mild yet dry summer, ensuring a successful harvest.

In conclusion, the 2021 Desiderio and Poggetto di Sopra vintages promise to be exciting additions to Avignonesi's repertoire. As we wait for more information, we can look forward to experiencing the unique flavours and character that these wines will undoubtedly offer.
