In a thrilling turn of events, the second-largest Powerball jackpot in history was won on Saturday, September 6, 2025. The winning tickets were sold in Missouri and Texas, creating a wave of excitement across the nation.
The jackpot, worth an astonishing $1.79bn, set a new record for the longest jackpot run, surviving an impressive 42 drawings before being claimed. The winning numbers for the drawing were 11, 23, 44, 61, 62, and red Powerball 17.
In addition to the two lucky winners, there were numerous other winners in the latest Powerball drawing. Over 9.9 million tickets won cash prizes, while eighteen players who matched all five white balls won $1m each. Two players in Kansas and Texas won $2m each by matching all white balls and using the Power Play option.
Nearly two dozen players matched five winning numbers but missed the jackpot, still walking away with substantial prizes.
Each of the winners will receive either $893.5m in annuity payments or a $410.3m cash prize. If they choose the annuity option, they will receive one immediate payment, followed by 29 annual payments, including a 5% interest per year.
The Powerball Product Group Chair and Iowa Lottery CEO, Matt Strawn, congratulated the winners and the Missouri and Texas Lotteries, expressing his delight at the record-breaking event. He also highlighted that each $2 ticket sold during this Powerball jackpot run supported vital public programs and services in communities.
It's important to note that the prize amounts are before applicable state and federal taxes. The largest Powerball jackpot was won in California on November 7, 2022, for $2.04bn.
The last time the Powerball jackpot was won was on May 31, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the game's history. As the dust settles, the nation eagerly awaits the next big win and the continued excitement that Powerball brings.
