Winter warmth on a budget: Embrace the "Igloo Sleep Method" for affordable warmth

In the midst of the cold winter months, keeping your bedroom warm and cosy can be a challenge. However, Bensons for Beds offers some cost-effective solutions to help you create a well-insulated environment.

One such solution is investing in an all-season duvet, such as the Slumberland 3-in-1 duvet. This duvet contains a 4.5 tog for warmer nights, a 9 tog for cooler nights, or can be combined to create a 13.5 tog for the coldest of nights, providing versatility and comfort.

Kids sleeping on top of a bunk bed or in a high or midsleeper bed could feel the benefits of this strategy for staying warm. Heated air is thinner than colder air, so it naturally rises, making sleeping higher up potentially beneficial for warmth.

Rachel Marshall, brand manager at Bensons for Beds, suggests taking inspiration from this method to keep bedrooms warm on a budget. She also advises using curtains to let the sun provide natural warmth during the day and insulate the room at night, and blocking out draughts with cost-effective draft stoppers made from towels or bundled up socks.

However, it's important to remember not to close all vents in your home. Rachel warns against closing any vents leading to the outside of your home, as this could lead to moisture build-up and potential mould growth. Mould in the bedroom can lead to sleep issues such as insomnia, snoring, allergic rhinitis, restlessness, and sleep apnea.

The logic of the igloo vent should be applied to the vents in your home to keep it dry. In fact, some areas of Canada, Greenland, and the Arctic use igloos as a method of staying warm, with inhabitants sleeping on high platforms. The Inuits' method of staying warm in colder climates has worked for thousands of years.

As temperatures in the UK are expected to drop as low as -10 °C this week, according to the Met Office's cold weather warning, these tips could come in handy. For more tips on keeping warm on a budget, visit the Bensons for Beds Sleep Hub.
