Wireless electric charging for Porsche's Cayenne Electric model now available for at-home installation
Porsche is set to revolutionise electric vehicle charging with the introduction of its innovative Wireless Charging system. The system, which will be available as an optional feature on the new Cayenne Electric, is set to launch initially in Europe in 2026, with other markets to follow.
The charging process is contactless and occurs over a distance of 10-15cm. The Cayenne Electric will initiate the charging process by parking above the floor plate. The base plate, a key component of the system, is equipped with a motion detector and foreign object detection to ensure safe charging.
The charging mat and a receiver unit located in the underbody of the vehicle make up the Wireless Charging system. The receiver unit automatically interrupts the charging process if interference is detected.
Porsche is proud to bring inductive charging to series production, a move that will undoubtedly enhance the user experience of electric mobility. The charging process begins automatically when the parking position is reached and the parking brake is activated.
The Cayenne Electric's Surround View parking function includes a special view to help park above the charging floor plate. Convenience functions like departure timer and cabin preconditioning are also available for wireless charging.
The "one-box" base plate contains all components aside from the supply cable, eliminating the need for a wall box or control unit. This simplifies installation and makes the system more user-friendly.
The Cayenne Electric's show car in Munich features a fluorescent camo-paint finish, adding a touch of style to the wireless charging system. Porsche Board Member for Development, Michael Steiner, emphasises the importance of ease of use, suitability for everyday use, and charging infrastructure in the acceptance of electric mobility.
Under alternating voltage, the electroluminescent material emits light on the Cayenne Electric's show car, adding a unique visual element to the charging process. The coating on the show car includes over 25 extremely thin layers, including conductive primers, electrode and insulating layers, and electroluminescent material with colour pigments.
Porsche claims to be the first car manufacturer to bring an 11 kW charging system with a "one-box" base plate for battery-electric vehicles to market. The first Porsche car equipped with this system is the new, fully electric generation of the Cayenne, with its world premiere planned for late 2025. The wireless charging ground plate will launch for sale in 2026.
Lastly, the "dynamic camouflage" pattern on the Cayenne Electric's show car is designed by Porsche, adding a touch of the brand's signature style to the vehicle. The Cayenne reduces its ride height automatically during the charging process, ensuring a smooth and efficient charging experience.
