within Sharjah's Ruling School: The Impact of a Poetic Verse on Sheikh Sultan's Mentor

In the heart of Sharjah, the first formal school in the UAE, established in the early 1940s, is set to become an education museum. Known as Al Qasimia School, this historic institution has played a significant role in the region's educational development.

Originally, Al Qasimia School was a humble palm-frond structure, replaced later by a coral house purchased by Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi. This house, once belonging to the well-known merchant Ismail Al Buraimi, who supplied traditional medicine and held a registry of births in Sharjah, was converted into a school containing five classrooms and a library.

The teachers at Al Qasimia School were both scholars of Sharia sciences and highly qualified instructors. They taught a diverse curriculum that included subjects such as the Holy Qur'an, Noble Hadith, reading and writing skills, grammar, calligraphy, mathematics, geography, principles of the English language, poetry recitation, sports, and other cultural activities.

During its academic year 1950-1951, Al Qasimia School served classes from Grades 1 through 5. It was during this period that Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi, the future ruler of Sharjah, began his school journey in Grade 4. In September 1951, Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, the person who would later transform Al Qasimia School into the Ministry of Education in Sharjah, started his school year at the same institution.

The educational development in Sharjah between 1951 and 1956 included the education of females, which developed and expanded from Al Qasimia School. A designated class for females was part of the school, and a palm frond screen was used to provide privacy for female students.

Al Qasimia School has been a link between traditional and modern education. Although less developed than the modern educational system in terms of introducing modern sciences, it relied on rote learning and memorization. However, it paved the way for the progressive educational system that Sharjah has today.

Visitors to the education museum can discover the history of education in Sharjah and learn about the contribution of Al Qasimia School in producing distinguished students. The museum will serve as a testament to the school's legacy and its role in shaping the educational landscape of the UAE.
