Women's track athlete from RIT confesses to sharing team and locker room with transgender athlete, whose presence sparked online controversy

In the ongoing legal battle surrounding the NCAA's transgender policy, a former Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) track athlete, Caroline Hill, has come forward with allegations of unfair competition and discomfort. Hill, now a public plaintiff in the Gaines v. NCAA lawsuit, claims that transgender athlete Sadie Schreiner continued to compete on the women's team and use the women's locker room at RIT, despite the NCAA changing its transgender inclusion policy in February 2025.

Hill, who held the program records for the 200- and 300-meter events early in her collegiate career, alleges that Schreiner broke these records in the subsequent years. Hill claims she and Schreiner were paired as "workout buddies" by their coaches.

The situation came to a head in 2024 when Schreiner broke Hill's record in the 300-meter event. Despite RIT providing a statement on Feb. 12, 2025, that Schreiner would not compete in the next meet, Hill alleges that Schreiner continued to train with the team and use the locker room.

Hill has expressed concerns about her safety and the potential for escalation while on campus and on the team. She has publicly spoken about her experience, expressing frustration that her concerns about Schreiner’s inclusion were dismissed by RIT officials, who defended Schreiner’s participation by pointing out that some cisgender women had higher testosterone levels than Schreiner.

Hill is advocating to protect women's sports and is calling for RIT to apologize and reinstate her records. RIT has declined to comment on Hill's allegations, and Schreiner's attorney did not respond to a request for comment.

The Gaines v. NCAA lawsuit includes multiple female athletes challenging the NCAA's transgender policy on Title IX grounds, arguing that allowing transgender women like Schreiner to compete in women’s sports violates protections for female athletes. The NCAA changed its policy in early 2025 to restrict biological males from competing in women’s categories, but disputes persist about enforcement and institutional compliance.

No final legal ruling or resolution for Hill's specific case or the broader Gaines v. NCAA lawsuit has been reported as of August 2025. Hill continues to press for her records to be restored and for reforms addressing fairness in women’s athletics.

In a separate development, Schreiner filed a lawsuit against Princeton University alleging the school excluded the athlete from a May 3 women's race. Schreiner's attorney provided an exclusive statement to Digital about the lawsuit against Princeton. Schreiner's lawsuit against Princeton claimed the actions of the officials caused the athlete emotional and physical harm.

The debates over the NCAA's transgender inclusion policy and fairness in women’s sports are ongoing without a final legal decision reported yet.
