In the heart of Italy's Liguria region, an investigation led by the Savona Prosecutor's Office has uncovered a significant illegal waste management operation. The operation, which has been ongoing since 2019, involves 32 individuals, including legal representatives of companies and their accomplices.
The investigation has revealed that the illegal activity was facilitated through an abusive transport activity, with trucks being used for illicit transport of waste, in violation of the Environmental Code. This illegal dumping occurred at the Via Caravaggio collection center, a facility meant for the disposal of municipal waste.
The system allowed waste from outside the municipal territory to be dumped, causing economic damage to the municipality. The disposal costs of the illegal waste fell on the municipality and consequently, the citizens. In some cases, the suspects used certificates of deceased Savona residents, proxies of deceased individuals, and documents belonging to unaware citizens for illegal dumping.
Numerous regular and irregular businesses were found to be involved in this operation. The local police in Savona seized 18 trucks for illegal transport of waste as part of the investigation. Bulky waste was dumped at the collection center, which should have been disposed of otherwise.
This operation was not limited to regular businesses, but also involved irregular ones. The suspects brought additional waste beyond what they had been delegated in some instances. The illegal activity has caused a significant stir in the community, with citizens expressing concern over the potential health and environmental implications.
The seizure was issued by the Savona Tribunal, and the legal proceedings against the 32 suspects are currently underway. However, their names remain unnamed in public sources. The investigation was confirmed through an investigation by the municipal police, and it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to environmental regulations and ethical business practices.
