In a series of comments published in the "New Osnabruecker Zeitung," Wolfgang Steiger, the General Secretary of the CDU's Economic Council, has expressed his support for reforms of the Eurozone Stability Pact, contradicting his earlier criticism of the suspension of debt and deficit rules announced by EU Commissioner for Economy, Paolo Gentiloni.

Gentiloni announced that the debt and deficit rules will be suspended in 2021 due to the coronavirus crisis, allowing deviation from the deficit rules, as stated by him. This general escape clause is set to remain active in 2021.

Steiger, however, has advocated for a strong internal market to be strengthened by economic principles, not by a "tin transfer union." He believes that the corona crisis should not lead to permanent debt accumulation and has suggested that complex exemption rules and discretionary powers of the Stability Pact should be abolished.

In 2021, Steiger called for reforms of the Eurozone Stability Pact to allow more flexibility in fiscal rules, enable growth-friendly investments, and improve mechanisms for crisis prevention and resolution. He has proposed introducing clear rules and more automatism in the deficit procedure to create a framework for sustainable economic activity.

Steiger's comments contradict his earlier criticism of Gentiloni's announcement, where he stated that such a suspension of debt and deficit rules could lead to permanent debt accumulation. However, he has now expressed his support for the reinstatement of the rules of the Stability Pact in the European Union.

Paolo Gentiloni, in response, has not yet specified the details of the proposed reforms to the Stability Pact. The proposed reforms are aimed at making the Stability Pact more innovative and competitive. Steiger suggests that these reforms should be in the spirit of an innovative and competitive Europe.

The proposed reforms by Gentiloni may face opposition from those who believe in strict adherence to the current rules of the Stability Pact. However, Steiger's support for the reinstatement of the rules contradicts his earlier criticism, indicating a potential shift in perspective amidst the ongoing economic challenges.
