Workforce efficiency is being undermined by a covert self-confidence deficit, according to recent studies conducted by Attensi.

In a groundbreaking study, Attensi, a leading provider of game-based simulation training solutions and an AI-powered people performance platform, has shed light on a pervasive issue affecting workplaces worldwide: "skill masking." This phenomenon, where employees hide their skill gaps to appear more competent, has been found to be prevalent among a majority (58%) of employees in their current roles.

Trond Aas, the CEO of Attensi, has been at the forefront of this research. He believes that success is often measured by checklists, not mastery and confidence, leading employees to mask their gaps rather than close them.

The study, which surveyed 2,000 employees across various industries and age groups, reveals that nearly half (46%) of the employees admit to pretending to understand tasks they don't, and 40% actively avoid asking for help. These behaviours are often rooted in "skill-set anxiety," a phenomenon that is especially pronounced among younger workers, with over half reporting frequent worries about being underqualified.

The most common reported consequence of poor onboarding is diminished confidence (55%). This lack of confidence can lead to the insidious practice of skill masking, as employees fear being judged or perceived as incompetent.

However, technology, such as AI-powered simulations, can help change this narrative. These tools allow people to rehearse tough conversations, practice decision-making, and close real skill gaps without fear of embarrassment. They create environments where people can safely stop pretending and start progressing.

Two-thirds (67%) of employees express willingness to use confidential, AI-powered role-play tools to practice and strengthen job-critical skills privately. This openness suggests a desire for safe spaces to learn and grow, free from the pressure of immediate performance.
