World Championship Road Race to lack the participation of Mathieu van der Poel, as Tour de France's double stage winner Thymen Arensman assumes the role of team leader for the Dutch squad in Rwanda.
Mathieu van der Poel's Summer Racing Plans and the Dutch Team's Road World Championships Ambitions
Mathieu van der Poel, the renowned Dutch cyclist, is gearing up for an exciting summer of racing. Van der Poel, who is a World Champion in the road, cyclocross, and gravel specialties, has his sights set on the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships. However, his participation in the event is contingent on how he performs in the Renewi Tour and the World Cup in Les Gets.
Van der Poel has added a mountain bike XCO World Cup in Les Gets on August 31 to his program for this summer. He aims to ride more mountain bike races to secure a good starting position at the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, which will take place in Valais, Switzerland on September 14.
Meanwhile, the Dutch National Federation announced the elite women's line-up for September's Road Worlds last week. Demi Vollering, Marianne Vos, and Anna van der Breggen are some major favourites for the Dutch women's team, while the men's team doesn't have a clear pre-race contender. Thymen Arensman, Sam Oomen, Wout Poels, Frank van den Broek, Koen Bouwman, and Bauke Mollema are part of the Dutch men's team for the 2025 Road World Championships.
Van der Poel will not compete in the 2025 Road World Championships for the Dutch elite men's line-up. Instead, he will focus on the Renewi Tour, which he has previously won in 2020. The tour will take place from August 20 to August 24, with key stages including the flat opening stage from Terneuzen to Breskens and the third stage featuring the Muur van Geraardsbergen, where he had previous success.
After the Renewi Tour, Van der Poel's focus will shift to mountain biking. He is unsure of participating in the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships due to catching pneumonia during the Tour and abandoning the race. Koos Moerenhout, sports director, stated that the lack of a clear favorite gives the Dutch team flexibility in approaching the race. The Dutch team's chances in the 2025 Road World Championships will rely on anticipating, reading the race, and getting in a breakaway, while also facing a battle of attrition.
Thymen Arensman will head the Dutch men's line-up for the 2025 Road World Championships. Arensman will also participate in the time trial event, set for September 21. His performance in the Renewi Tour and the World Cup in Les Gets will play a crucial role in determining his readiness for the World Championships.
The Dutch women's team, on the other hand, boasts several strong contenders. The battle for the road World Championships title promises to be intense, with Vollering, Vos, and van der Breggen leading the charge. The race will undoubtedly be a thrilling spectacle for cycling enthusiasts around the world.
