In the ongoing race for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, Nigeria faces a crucial match against Rwanda on Saturday, September 6, 2025.

The Super Eagles are currently in fourth place with 7 points from seven games, putting them in a precarious position as only group winners are guaranteed a spot at the World Cup finals. Meanwhile, Rwanda sits in third place with 8 points from seven games.

The group leaders, South Africa, have been in impressive form, currently leading Group C with 16 points from seven games. Their recent victory, a 3-0 win against Lesotho, was marked by a brace from Lyle Foster and a goal from Oswin Appollis. Foster's second goal was set up by the goalkeeper Sekhoane Moerane's mistake, which saw him spill a strike from Aubrey Modiba.

The first goal of the match was scored by Mohau Nkota in the 15th minute.

Denmark leads Group C in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification. The group includes Denmark, Greece, Scotland, and Belarus, with Denmark currently at the top.

The pressure now shifts to Nigeria for a decisive trip to Bloemfontein to battle South Africa on Tuesday. It's a crucial match for the Super Eagles, who must win all their remaining games to stand a chance of qualifying for the World Cup finals.

FIFA is yet to rule on Bafana Bafana's administrative error in March, when midfielder Teboho Mokoena was fielded against Lesotho despite being suspended.

Benin is in second place with 11 points from seven games, making the race for the top spot even more competitive. As the qualifiers progress, every match becomes increasingly important for the Super Eagles and Rwanda as they strive to secure a spot at the World Cup finals.
