Germany's Women's Volleyball Team Falls to Italy in World Championship
Germany's women's volleyball team suffered a disappointing defeat in the round of 16 of the 2022 World Championship, losing to Olympic champions Italy in a tight three-set match (0:3). The final scores were 22:25, 18:25, 11:25.
Outside hitter Lina Alsmeier expressed her disappointment, stating that the team had something different in mind than losing in three sets. "We wanted to put up a bigger fight, as we did against Poland," she said. "We started the match strongly, leading 10:8, but unfortunately, we made too many mistakes in the second set."
The German team struggled with communication issues in the third set, while Italy consistently turned defensive actions into effective attacking opportunities. The Italian defense was outstanding in the second set, and they dominated the third set from the start.
Despite the loss, Alsmeier believes the team has made significant progress this summer. "We've come a long way, and I'm proud of what we've achieved," she said. "We'll take this experience and use it to improve for future tournaments."
Italy has been in impressive form, having won 33 consecutive official matches, and they demonstrated their dominance in this match. The German team, coached by Giulio Bregoli, struggled to make an impact, with their block in particular failing to make a significant contribution.
The tournament, which took place every four years, has now been changed to take place every two years. This is the first World Championship with 32 teams, and the previous knockout stage was before the quarterfinals. In 2022, Germany was eliminated in the second round.
Libero Anna Pogany and the reception performed solidly at the start, but the team's performance in the second set was particularly disappointing. Germany scored some block points in the second set, but it wasn't enough to turn the tide of the match.
