Germany to Host the 13th World Games in 2029
After a gap of four decades, Germany will once again play host to the World Games, a global event showcasing non-Olympic sports. The 13th edition of the Games will take place in Karlsruhe from July 19 to 29, 2029.
Karlsruhe, a city in southwest Germany, is no stranger to the World Games. It previously hosted the event in 1989 and has been confirmed as the host for 2029, making it the only city to have hosted the World Games twice by 2029. This double hosting is a global premiere.
The World Games 2029 will be a festival of sport, featuring approximately 35 sports and around 5,000 world-class athletes from more than 100 countries. The sports lineup includes Baseball/Softball, Beach Handball, Archery, Billiards, Cheerleading, Duathlon, Faustball, Flag Football, Floorball, Finswimming, Frisbee Sports, Gymnastics, Inline Skating, Ju-Jitsu, Karate, Canoeing, Kickboxing, Climbing, Korfball, Weightlifting, Lacrosse, Air Sports, Muay Thai, Orienteering, Petanque, Powerboating, Racquetball, Lifesaving, Sambo, Squash, Dance Sport, Tug of War, Wakeboarding, Wushu, and more.
Team Germany delivered an outstanding overall performance at the 11th World Games in Birmingham, USA, with 47 medals (24 gold, 7 silver, 16 bronze). As the Games return to Germany, the country aims to demonstrate its openness as a host and professionalism as an organizer of major sporting events.
The state of Baden-Württemberg will contribute 33 million euros, and the federal government will contribute 55 million euros, making the estimated cost for the 13th World Games approximately 120 million euros.
The flag and a symbolic heart for the World Games 2029 were received at the closing ceremony of the 12th World Games in Chengdu, China. Dr. Christiane Schenderlein, the Federal Minister of State for Sport and Volunteer Affairs, and Dr. Frank Mentrup, the Mayor of Karlsruhe, were present to receive the symbolic tokens.
Theresa Schopper, the Minister of Sport for Baden-Württemberg and the Chair of the Sport Ministers' Conference, expressed her excitement about the upcoming event. IWGA President José Perurena also anticipates world-class sporting action and entertainment at the 13th World Games.
As Germany prepares to welcome the world for the 13th World Games, it continues to strive for excellence in the realm of non-Olympic sports, aiming to further boost its second place position in the historical overall ranking of the World Games since 1981, behind Italy.
