Karlsruhe to Host the 13th World Games in 2029

In a significant development for the sports world, the city of Karlsruhe, Germany, has been awarded the hosting rights for the 13th World Games in 2029. The International World Games Association (IWGA) made the announcement in May 2024.

This marks a historic moment as Karlsruhe becomes the first city to host the World Games of non-Olympic sports for the second time. The event, slated to take place from July 19 to 29, 2029, is expected to be a grand celebration of sport and will have a sustainable atmosphere.

The planned costs for the World Games 2029 in Karlsruhe amount to around 120 million euros. The state of Baden-Württemberg is planning to contribute 33 million euros to the funding, while the federal government is set to contribute 55 million euros.

Approximately 5,000 world-class athletes from over 100 countries are expected to participate in the games. The IWGA anticipates around 35 sports to be represented, ensuring a diverse and exciting lineup of events.

Theresa Schopper, Baden-Württemberg's Minister of Sport and Chair of the Sport Ministers' Conference, emphasized the athletic achievements at the World Games being on par with those at the Olympics. IWGA President José Perurena shared similar sentiments, expressing excitement about the World Games 2029 in Karlsruhe, stating that the global community can look forward to world-class sporting action and entertainment.

Dr. Christiane Schenderlein, Minister of State for Sport and Volunteerism in the federal government, expressed her excitement about hosting the World Games 2029 in Germany. Dr. Frank Mentrup, Mayor of the city of Karlsruhe, expressed delight about the World Games returning to Karlsruhe.

The World Games Song 2029 was performed by Karlsruhe artist Toni Mogens, adding a local touch to the global event. The flag and a symbolic heart were handed over to Karlsruhe officials at the closing ceremony of the 12th World Games in Chengdu, China.

In the historical overall ranking since 1981, Germany stood at second place before the Chengdu Games, behind Italy. At the 11th World Games in Birmingham (USA) in 2022, Team Germany topped the medal table with 47 medals (24 gold, 7 silver, 16 bronze).

For press inquiries and citizen inquiries, contact information is available on the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport's website. The World Games 2029 promises to be an unforgettable event, and Karlsruhe is gearing up to welcome athletes and spectators from around the world.
