World launches first commercial 5-band Remote Radio Unit deployment by ZTE and MTN
ZTE and MTN Collaborate to Drive Sustainable Digital Transformation in South Africa
MTN South Africa and ZTE Corporation have made a significant stride in advancing Africa's telecommunications infrastructure with the successful deployment of the world's first 5-band Remote Radio Unit (RRU) in the Western Cape Province. This innovation marks a new benchmark for sustainable development in the telecommunications industry.
Rami Farah, Chief Technology Officer of MTN South Africa, commented on the collaboration, stating that it addresses challenges in coverage, capacity, cost, and energy efficiency. The 5-band RRU, developed by ZTE, integrates all MTN South Africa's low and mid bands (FDD) into a single compact unit, reducing the number of RAN Radio Frequency modules on towers by 50%.
The 5-band RRU also addresses the challenges faced by network operators such as power consumption, tower load, and limited space. Powered by ZTE's in-house design chipset, the 5-band RRU achieves a 42.7% reduction in overall site power consumption and a 45.8% improvement in energy efficiency. Additionally, the deployment decreases equipment weight by 23% and minimizes wind resistance by 18%.
Luca Shen, Chief Executive Officer of ZTE South Africa, emphasized ZTE's commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions and the mutual benefits gained from the collaboration with MTN. The shared vision of "protecting nature through technology and driving the future through innovation" guides the work of ZTE and MTN in bridging the digital divide, building smarter and more sustainable networks, and contributing to economic growth and social progress across Africa.
South Africa, one of Africa's largest telecommunications markets, serves a population of over 60 million people. With MTN providing more than 97% LTE population coverage across the country, this collaboration is set to further enhance connectivity and digital services for the South African population.
This deployment underscores the immense potential of innovative technology to drive economic growth while promoting environmental sustainability. The collaboration between ZTE and MTN continues to focus on fostering the digital economy and building sustainable networks in Africa.
