World Literacy Day garnered focus in Halle (Saale)
News Article: Halle (Saale) Boosts Basic Education Ahead of International Literacy Day
Every year on the 8th of September, the world celebrates International Literacy Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness and stimulating discussions about the importance of literacy. This year, the day was observed on Monday, 8th September 2025, and the city of Halle (Saale) in Germany is taking significant strides to promote literacy within its community.
In collaboration with the city of Halle, the Comprehensive Basic Education Center Halle - Saalekreis has been established as a central facility to provide comprehensive and free assistance. Located at Oleariusstraße 7, 06108 Halle (Saale), the center can be visited without prior registration. The center is part of a comprehensive basic education project in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, funded by the Ministry of Education Saxony-Anhalt and co-financed by the European Union.
The center offers a variety of courses and assistance, including vocational courses in reading and writing, financial literacy, digital literacy, health literacy, and political literacy. The goal is to strengthen basic education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all residents.
Dr. Judith Marquardt, the Deputy Mayor for Culture and Sport in Halle (Saale), emphasised the importance of reading and writing, stating that they are human rights. She further highlighted that lack of adequate reading and writing skills often leads to economic and social restrictions in the city.
Sadly, millions of people worldwide are still excluded from basic reading and writing skills. In Halle (Saale), approximately 20,000 adults between the ages of 18 and 64 lack adequate reading and writing skills. However, with the establishment of the Comprehensive Basic Education Center, the city is working towards bridging this gap.
Arnfried Gläser, the contact person for the basic education center, can be reached at 0345 221 3397 or [email protected]. The city of Halle (Saale) has also built up a network of proven contact points and projects to support those affected.
The International Literacy Day aims to recognise reading and writing as a prerequisite for social participation, and the efforts of the Comprehensive Basic Education Center Halle - Saalekreis align perfectly with this mission. By promoting literacy, the city is not only fostering education but also equal opportunities, poverty reduction, and social cohesion.
