World Rankings Highlight Talent and Tech: Switzerland, Singapore, and UK Take Top Spots in 2017 Global Talent Competitiveness Index
The Global Talent Competitiveness Index (GTCI), an annual benchmarking report that measures a country's ability to grow, attract, and retain talent, has ranked the United Kingdom and the United States third and fourth respectively in its 2017 edition.
Published by INSEAD, a world-renowned graduate business school with campuses in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, the GTCI report provides insights into the global talent landscape. In collaboration with the Human Capital Leadership Institute (HCLI) and The Adecco Group, the 2017 report also introduced the Global Cities Talent Competitiveness Index (GCTCI).
London topped the GCTCI's first edition, followed by New York, Singapore, Paris, Chicago, Sydney, San Francisco, Toronto, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. San Francisco and Los Angeles, the two American cities in the top ten, ranked fourth and eighth respectively.
Switzerland and Singapore emerged as the top-ranked countries in the GTCI 2017, with four Nordic countries (Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway) also making it to the top 10. Copenhagen, Zurich, and Helsinki were the top three cities in the first edition of the GCTCI.
The GTCI 2017 report argues that while jobs at all levels are being replaced by machines, technology is also creating new opportunities. As the fast advance of automation and artificial intelligence disrupts the way we live and work, education system reforms are urgently needed to provide the right technical and people skills, and the ability to adapt to change.
In this digital era, a premium is placed not on employees who possess the highest level of technical competencies, but on those who have the ability to learn and re-learn on the job. To harness the power of human capital, governments and companies alike must inculcate a culture of continuous learning in the workforce.
As a multi-career reality becomes the norm, workers must boost their employability by committing to life-long learning. Employment policies must combine employers' need for flexibility with social protection. Governments and business players need to work together to build educational systems and labor market policies that are fit for purpose.
The fourth edition of the GTCI, titled "Talent and Technology: Shaping the Future of Work," explores the effects of technological change on talent competitiveness. The report can be downloaded at this link, along with the GTCI 2017 Infographic and Video graphic.

The role of education will remain fundamental to reach a complex set of goals, including the creation of new job opportunities and sustainable growth, while offering new generations the possibility to live and work in a world that reflects the values they believe in. The Human Capital Leadership Institute (HCLI) is an aggregator and neutral player in the human capital ecosystem, offering thought leadership and insights on understanding Asia, successfully doing business in Asia, and its implications on leadership and human capital strategies for Asia.
In conclusion, the GTCI 2017 report underscores the importance of continuous learning, adaptability, and collaboration in the face of technological advancements. It emphasizes the need for a strong education system, flexible employment policies, and a culture of lifelong learning to ensure a competitive workforce in the future.
