World War II's Unconventional Warrior: The Bear Named Wojtek
Wojtek, the Joyous Soldier Bear: A Remarkable Tale from World War II
In the heart of Scotland's Edinburgh Zoo lies the story of an extraordinary soldier—Wojtek, a Syrian brown bear who served with the Polish II Corps during World War II.
This orphaned bear cub, found by an Iranian boy, was given a new life when he was adopted by the 22nd Artillery Supply Company in 1942. The company, led by Lieutenant General Władysław Anders, renamed him Wojtek, which translates to "joyous soldier" in Polish.
Wojtek quickly became a mascot for the company, earning his stripes through his remarkable feats. He was taught to carry crates of mortar rounds by his comrades and reportedly did so without fail, even during the gruelling battles. His valiant performance, particularly during the battle of Monte Cassino, earned him legendary status.
In recognition of his service, Wojtek was made a private of the Polish II Corps in 1943. He was officially recognised as a member of the Polish Army, given a rank, service number, and pay book to legitimise his status. Following his valiant performance, Wojtek was also made the official emblem of the 22nd Artillery Supply Company.
As the Polish II Corps journeyed through the Middle East, Wojtek travelled with them, growing significantly during the war, reaching a height of 6 ft and a weight of 485 lbs. The bear even accompanied the 22nd Artillery Supply Company when they joined forces with the 3rd Carpathian Division of the British Army in Palestine.
After the war, Wojtek retired to the Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland. He perked up when he heard visitors speak Polish, reminiscing about his army days. Wojtek's memories of army life stayed with him for the rest of his days, until his passing on December 2, 1963.
Today, Wojtek's story continues to inspire, a testament to the unique bond between man and animal, and a reminder of the extraordinary stories that often emerge from the pages of history.
