Wuppertal's Observation Tower
The Toelleturm, a historic observation tower in Wuppertal-Barmen, stands proudly at an elevation of 333 meters above sea level. Built between 1887 and 1888, the tower was a gift to the city from the Tölle family, who financed its construction and donated it in memory of industrialist Ludwig-Ernst Toelle.
The tower, which stands at 26.25 meters tall, was officially opened on April 24, 1888. However, it was not without its challenges. In 1949, the Toelleturm was closed due to safety concerns, and again in 1961. But the tower was resilient, undergoing extensive repairs in 1950 and 1970, and comprehensive renovation in 1978, 1989, and 1990.
A bronze plaque above the entrance door of the tower reads, "Toelletower, built 1888, renewed 1990." The actual dedication plaque reads, "This observation tower was built in the year 1887 and donated to the property of the Barmer Association for the Improvement of the City in memory of Ludwig-Ernst Toelle, 1822-1886, by his family."
Visiting the Toelleturm is a worthwhile experience, offering a remarkable view of Wuppertal, the Rhine, Wupper valley, northern highlands, monorail, Westphalia, Remscheid, and Düsseldorf television tower on a clear day. The tower has a gallery at 7 meters height and an observation platform at approximately 25 meters above the plateau.
The Toelleturm is open to the public on Sundays, public holidays, and Saturdays during Easter, from 12.00-18.00. On weekdays, opening hours are by arrangement, with group visits possible if the weather is clear and dry with a minimum temperature of 18 degrees.
The Toelleturm is a testament to the city's rich history and the generosity of the Tölle family. Its continued existence and renovation are a testament to the value placed on preserving historical landmarks for future generations to enjoy.
