Yankees Stun Rays with Nine Homers, Equaling Franchise Record, in 13-3 Domination
Yankees Break Franchise Record with Nine Home Runs
The New York Yankees made history on a recent game day at George M. Steinbrenner Field, as they tied and then broke their own record for the most home runs in a single game. The team, currently holding the top wild card spot with a record of 68-57, won their fourth straight game and have won six out of their last seven.
In this record-breaking game, Aaron Judge hit his 40th home run of the season, joining Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Mickey Mantle as the only Yankees with four 40-homer seasons. Judge was not alone in his feat, as Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton also slugged back-to-back-to-back homers in the first inning.
The Yankees' nine-homer performance was not a one-time occurrence, as they previously achieved this feat against the Tampa Bay Rays on a different occasion. José Caballero, a former Ray, hit two home runs as a Yankee for the first time, contributing to the team's impressive display of power.
The Rays, on the other hand, are currently 61-65 and 6 1/2 games out of a postseason spot. The team traded José Caballero to the Yankees at the July 31 trade deadline, hoping to boost their chances of making it to the playoffs.
The Yankees are not the only team to have achieved such a feat, as both the Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies had a game with nine home runs on Sept. 4, 1999. However, the Yankees are the only team in history with two nine-homer games in one season.
In the Home Run Derby, Shohei Ohtani is the only other active player to hit 40 home runs in four different seasons. Jazz Chisholm Jr. also hit a home run in the game, adding to the excitement of the event.
Manager Aaron Boone was involved in the games where the team hit at least nine home runs, leading the team through their historic performances. The Toronto Blue Jays set a single-game record with 10 home runs against the Baltimore Orioles on Sept. 14, 1987, but the Yankees' record-breaking game against the Rays will surely be remembered as one of the most impressive displays of power in baseball history.
