Year 2011 marked the strengthening of the online fashion retail industry
In the year 2011, the fashion industry underwent a transformative shift as fashion e-commerce continued to soar. This trend was evident in the significant increase in online sales of fashion items, a phenomenon that marked a notable development in the sector.
According to data from the second quarter of 2011, sales of clothing through the Internet reached an impressive 81.4 million euros, representing a 69.5% increase over the same period the previous year. Footwear and leather articles also experienced a 66.9% increase in online sales during this period.
The growth of fashion e-commerce was a trend that had been building in recent years. Factors such as the waning reluctance to online purchases, the consolidation of Spanish sales clubs like Privalia, BuyVip, and Ofertix, the penetration of foreign platforms such as Asos and Yoox, and the commitment of companies like Inditex to the web all contributed to these increases.
The boom in online fashion sales was not limited to clothing alone. The fashion sector as a whole experienced a significant increase in sales of clothing, footwear, and accessories through the Internet. This shift was so pronounced that fashion became the sixth most dynamic sector in online sales, surpassing traditionally heavier products and services such as artistic, sports, and recreational shows and training programs.
The growth of fashion e-commerce was observed in a year of consolidation and growth for many platforms. In 2011, the e-commerce of fashion continued to grow, with many fashion e-commerce platforms launched in previous years seeing growth in this year.
The influx of new customers was also significant. Online fashion purchases gained a large number of new followers during the year 2011, with a total of 2.87 million buyers. This represented a 20.1% increase over the previous year, or 481,000 new customers.
Despite the lack of information on the three leading Spanish online fashion markets active in 2011, it is clear that the growth of fashion e-commerce was a significant phenomenon in the industry. As we move forward, it will be interesting to see how this trend continues to shape the fashion landscape.
