Zambia finalizes vaccine production agreement with International Vaccine Institute

In a groundbreaking move, the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) has announced a strategic partnership with the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) to strengthen Zambia's vaccine manufacturing capacity. This initiative marks the first of its kind in Zambia, setting the country apart as a pioneer in Africa's health manufacturing landscape.

The partnership, according to ZNPHI Director-General Professor Roma Chilengi, is a "strategic leap forward" that will reshape the continent's reliance on imported vaccines. The deal is anticipated to open pathways for innovation in vaccine production, contributing significantly to the improvement of health outcomes in the region.

World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative Clement Peter Lasuba views this partnership as a turning point for Africa's health agenda. He reaffirms WHO's support for Zambia's ambitions in local vaccine production, expressing hope that other countries will follow Zambia's lead to improve the well-being of people across the region.

The partnership aims to create a robust vaccine production ecosystem in Zambia, supporting national needs and enabling regional distribution across Africa. It is expected to strengthen regional health resilience in the long term, a crucial aspect in the face of future health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Professor Chilengi emphasizes the importance of self-sufficiency in vaccine supply chains, particularly in light of lessons learned during the pandemic. She highlights the partnership as a commitment to a healthier, more self-reliant Africa.

The partnership will see Zambia take the lead in local vaccine production, with the aim of improving access to life-saving immunizations in Zambia and across the region. WHO stresses the need to prepare communities for the transition to locally produced vaccines, ensuring their acceptance and effective implementation.

Lasuba, in expressing his optimism, believes that this partnership will pave the way for a more resilient and healthier Africa. He encourages other countries to embrace similar initiatives to bolster their health sectors and contribute to the continent's health resilience.
