"Zelensky acknowledges Putin's proposal for a face-to-face in Moscow"
In an interview with ABC News, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has called Moscow the capital of a terrorist state and expressed his disapproval for a proposed meeting with President Vladimir Putin in the Russian city.
Zelensky stated that the proposed meeting terms are unacceptable and that he cannot travel to Moscow while Ukraine is under daily rocket fire. He further noted that if someone doesn't want to meet during the war, they can propose unacceptable terms.
Zelensky's sentiments were echoed by Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrei Sibiga, who finds Putin's offer to meet in Moscow unacceptable. The Foreign Minister's stance comes after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Turkey stated on September 2 that Zelensky and Putin are not yet ready for a personal meeting.
Despite Putin's readiness to meet with Zelensky in Moscow, the Ukrainian President suggested that Putin visit Kyiv instead. This request comes as formal bilateral peace talks have not taken place as of February 2025, with Zelensky and Putin having not visited any additional countries beyond Ukraine and Russia for direct negotiations on the Russia-Ukraine war.
Zelensky believes Putin's invitation is an attempt to delay a real meeting. He made these comments during the interview, which took place without any prior context regarding ongoing negotiations or previous invitations.
It is worth noting that the interview also revealed that there are options for turning off descriptions, opening subtitles settings, and turning off subtitles in a modal window during the conversation. However, the details of these options were not discussed in the interview.
As the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues, the international community will be watching closely to see if and when these leaders will come to the table for meaningful discussions to bring an end to the ongoing war.
