Zelensky Endorses U.S. Trade Taxes on India and Other Nations Conducting Trade with Russia During Conflict Scenario
India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has once again expressed his commitment to resolving the conflict in Ukraine, following a series of diplomatic engagements and discussions with key global leaders.
At a recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) conference in China, Modi held meetings with both Russian and Chinese leaders, as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The conversations focused on ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy, in an interview with ABC News, has expressed his support for US tariffs on nations dealing with Russia, a stance that aligns with India's consistent position. Modi has also been maintaining diplomatic efforts to help mediate an end to the conflict.
In a recent meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, the two leaders discussed the Ukraine crisis. The meeting reaffirmed the strong India-France partnership and their shared commitment to global peace and stability.
The Trump administration has been preparing to impose tougher sanctions on Russia, with Kevin Hassett, the director of the National Economic Council, alluding to the imposition of additional sanctions on Moscow. Hassett mentioned India as an example of nations that could face economic responses for dealing with Russia.
However, India has been increasing its support for ending the violence in Ukraine in recent weeks. Modi has reaffirmed India's position on the need for an early and peaceful resolution of the conflict.
Modi and Zelenskyy had two conversations about ending the conflict in Ukraine last month. In one of these conversations, Modi expressed his satisfaction at having a conversation with Zelenskyy and learning about his thoughts on the latest events.
India remains committed to making every possible contribution in resolving the conflict in Ukraine. The country's oil imports from Russia are a key concern for the Trump administration, but the specifics of India's role in recent negotiations for a friendship agreement with the USA to boycott Russia are not clear.
Despite these concerns, the Trump administration has declared its preparedness to increase penalties against Russia. Modi, in his diplomatic efforts, aims to further strengthen bilateral ties with Ukraine and contribute to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
