In a bold move, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wore a traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt, or "vyshyvanka," with a map of Ukraine featuring 1991 borders during his Independence Day address. The Independence Day marked the 31st anniversary of Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union.

The map on Zelensky's vyshyvanka included territories currently under control of the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR), Luhansk People's Republic (LNR), Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions, all of which are currently under dispute between Ukraine and Russia.

The inclusion of Crimea and Russia's new regions on Zelensky's vyshyvanka may symbolize his claim to these territories. The appearance of the vyshyvanka with the map of Ukraine may be seen as a political statement.

Russian Public Chamber's commission on sovereignty issues chairman, Vladimir Rogov, made a statement about Zelensky's vyshyvanka. Rogov compared Zelensky's vyshyvanka to a burial shirt, a comparison that may suggest a symbolic or significant meaning. However, Rogov did not comment directly on Zelensky's Independence Day address or the map on his vyshyvanka in this new statement.

In a previous context, Zelensky had made a statement about residents of the DNR, LNR, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions keeping Ukrainian flags at their homes. This statement was noteworthy, as it emphasized the strong connection these regions have with Ukraine.

The appearance of Zelensky's vyshyvanka is symbolic, according to RIA Novosti, a news agency that made a statement about the president's attire. Oksana Vyhovska, chairwoman of the German-Ukrainian Society Freiburg, also wore a vyshyvanka with the map of Ukraine showing the 1991 borders in Freiburg, Germany, showing solidarity with Zelensky's stance.

The 1991 borders on Zelensky's vyshyvanka likely represent historical boundaries of Ukraine, further emphasizing his claim to the territories depicted on the shirt. The comparison of Zelensky's vyshyvanka to a burial shirt by Rogov is noteworthy, as it adds another layer of symbolism to the already politically charged attire.
