In a recent meeting held in Uzhhorod, Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky and Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico discussed a range of pressing issues, with a focus on energy security and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Zelensky shared details of his recent talks with US President Donald Trump, discussing Kyiv's work within the "coalition of willing." He also confirmed Ukraine's intention to continue strikes on energy facilities in Russia. However, he did not disclose the number of NATO soldiers in Ukraine during the meeting.
Negotiations on the number and details of NATO's military presence in Ukraine are ongoing. Notably, Poland, Italy, Romania, and Croatia have officially ruled out plans to send their military to Ukrainian territory.
The key topic of the meeting was energy security, particularly Ukraine's attacks on the Druzhba oil pipeline. Zelensky stated that Russian gas and oil have no future for European countries, a sentiment echoed by his stance on not resuming gas or oil supplies to Slovakia through its territory.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces have struck the Druzhba oil pipeline three times over the past month, causing supply disruptions in Hungary and Slovakia. Russian authorities have stated that any NATO units in Ukraine will be considered legitimate military targets.
Fico expressed his belief that the sides discussed the prerequisites for a swift resolution of the situation in Ukraine. He also emphasized Slovakia's readiness to contribute to the normalization of relations between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
The meeting marked the formation of a new group, the "Volunteers" ("volenterosi" in Italian), consisting of 26 countries committed to supporting Kyiv in various ways, including deploying troops upon ceasefire. Fico shared details of his recent contacts with Chinese representatives, suggesting potential international support for Ukraine.
Fico expressed confidence in the imminent end of the conflict in Ukraine and the restoration of relations with Russia. He also noted the possibility of establishing a dialogue between Kyiv and Moscow with the participation of European partners.
